Career memes of the week: technical support – part 2

2 Sep 2014

This week’s career memes drop back in on technical support. If you think the job of tech support staff consists of turning computers off and on, think again.

Tech support employees are responsible for installing and configuring computer systems, diagnosing and fixing faults with hardware and/or software, logging customer or co-workers’ IT issues, and even analysing these logs to spot trends and underlying issues.

Due to the nature of the job, tech support staff need to be able to think logically and analytically, possess strong problem-solving skills, communicate technological terms in layman’s terms, and keep up to date with the latest technology.

Tech support staff usually have an educational background in IT, maths or computer science.

In Ireland, a technical support specialist can expect to earn an average annual salary of €26,548, according to PayScale.com.
