Data centre managers, the professionals who maintain and operate facilities that house computer systems, such as servers and networking appliances, receive the career meme treatment this week.

What they do: A data centre manager’s duties can include supervising operations, maintenance and customer service staff, installing custom upgrades, replacing cables and components, guiding customers through the centre on tours, co-ordinating work with other organisations, planning for capacity changes, and ensuring compliance with government regulations.

What they don’t do: Simply store organisations’ data on servers.

Educational requirements: Data centre managers should ideally have a bachelor’s degree in a field related to computer science, internet technology or facilities management.

Required skills: Communication, leadership, problem solving, facilities maintenance, experience with computing or networking hardware and software.

Salary: A data centre manager can expect to earn an average annual salary of US$86,306, according to PayScale.com.
