Summer is over – that means a glut of job announcements

4 Sep 2015

As summer comes to a close, it seems as though the number of tech job announcements is returning to usual levels.

This week alone saw job announcements every day of the week, adding up to 185 new jobs. That figure includes 80 jobs at a brewing company in Drogheda, 30 jobs at Deloitte, and 25 aeronautics research positions in Cork.

We wrote at the start of the week that more than 900 tech jobs were announced during August, which is great. However, that figure is, comparatively speaking, quite low, and we’re curious to see what September will bring.

With Career Zoo launching this week, there’s no doubt that a number of prominent companies will be announcing hiring plans between now and 12 September, so that should buoy numbers even further.

This week, we heard from Career Zoo’s director, Brian Ó hOisín, that the event is seeing more international talent than ever before, and Ireland is certainly welcoming to them. Angela Garcia, for example. settled here after moving from Portugal to work at Storm Technology. She spoke to us about that move.

We also looked at the growing field of data science. John Kennedy told us that, when it comes to data science and data analytics, Ireland is already reaping the benefits of the whirlwind of job opportunities. No doubt we have many more job announcements to look forward to in that field.

Stepping away from job announcements, we learned that Facebook has revealed its new education platform, designed to free up classroom time for more one-on-one teaching and learning. The programme places assignments and schedules in the cloud, making it easier for teachers and parents to track a child’s progress quickly.

And, as always, we finish on a lighthearted note. As the first full week back at school draws to a close, we put together some memes and videos that might make teachers feel a little more positive as the rest of the year stretches interminably before them.

Just 178 days to go, guys.
