Career Zoo 10 drew thousands of jobseekers to The Convention Centre Dublin on Saturday 12 September. Many of them were there to talk with Zalando.

Zalando were at Career Zoo, Ireland’s largest tech recruitment event, looking for data scientists and software engineers to join the online fashion retailer in its Dublin offices.

Siliconrepublic.com spoke to David O’Donoghue, Head of Technology at Zalando, Dublin, about Zalando’s story, and about what the company looks for from candidates.

O’Donoghue mentioned the challenges of working in data science, and highlighted the importance of finding candidates that can live up to those challenges.

As well as hard skills, Zalando looks for candidates who will be passionate about their job and embrace the environment at the company, which enables people to fully engage in their work.

Discussing the company’s ethos, O’Donoghue discussed how diversity is engrained in Zalando’s very DNA, with hundreds of different nationalities, a wide range of ages, and all gender orientations represented throughout the Zalando workforce.

O’Donoghue also talked about the renewed energy and buzz surrounding the tech industry as the economic recovery gets under way.
