This week opened with the potentially startling news that 85pc of Irish professionals lack the necessary IT skills to take advantage of the tech boom in their sectors. Think about that. If you work on a team of 100 people, 85 of them are not skilled enough to do their jobs. You might even be one of them.
There’s good news here, though: you aren’t unsalvageable and there are always opportunities to upskill or even to move into another discipline.
Some companies are taking the burden upon themselves, with Airbnb solving its data science skills gap through an in-house Data University, offering opportunities to upskill to all of its employees.
IT security company ESET is calling on millennials to consider a move to cybersecurity, neatly narrowing that area’s skills gap while also offering a myriad of opportunities for young workers in need of a job.
The emerging areas of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning can offer other avenues for employment and career development. This week, we heard from Hays’ Adam Shapley, who talked us through the opportunities and challenges presented to the tech jobs landscape by AI.
