Want to shake up your career? We can help

30 Jun 2017

If something isn’t feeling right in your career, it can be hard to know what to do. You can feel stuck. We’re here to help get you unstuck.

This week opened with the potentially startling news that 85pc of Irish professionals lack the necessary IT skills to take advantage of the tech boom in their sectors. Think about that. If you work on a team of 100 people, 85 of them are not skilled enough to do their jobs. You might even be one of them.

There’s good news here, though: you aren’t unsalvageable and there are always opportunities to upskill or even to move into another discipline.

Some companies are taking the burden upon themselves, with Airbnb solving its data science skills gap through an in-house Data University, offering opportunities to upskill to all of its employees.

IT security company ESET is calling on millennials to consider a move to cybersecurity, neatly narrowing that area’s skills gap while also offering a myriad of opportunities for young workers in need of a job.

The emerging areas of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning can offer other avenues for employment and career development. This week, we heard from Hays’ Adam Shapley, who talked us through the opportunities and challenges presented to the tech jobs landscape by AI.

We also rooted out five of the top online courses to upskill to a machine learning career – an area you should definitely be considering if you want to be indispensable in the tech sector.

But if none of this works for you, and you get kicked to the job-seeking kerb, it’s not the end of the world. Getting fired can be tough – suddenly, rent and mortgage, car loans, and, y’know, being able to eat, are all up in the air – but it can also be liberating, particularly if you were stuck in a job that was sapping your soul. We took a look at some of the little things you can do to get over being fired and move on to the next thing.

Losing your job can give you an opportunity to decide if you were working in the right area at all. We understand that changing career paths can be daunting, so we’ve sourced some advice to counter all your doubts. Trust us.

And if that’s still not enough for you, you could always consider ‘disrupting yourself’, which isn’t as weird as you think it might be. Techmums founder and Inspirefest 2017 speaker Dr Sue Black talked to us about why following the corporate model of disruption on a personal level can be hugely valuable.
