Since the end of the summer holiday season, we’ve been seeing a slow uptick in jobs announcements. This week, that uptick wasn’t so slow.
The summer months were a bit quiet for jobs announcements. Now that the kids are back in school, however, it seems as though the business sector in Ireland is getting back to, well, business.
This week saw an impressive 1,507 jobs announced in the STEM sector, from pharma roles to software roles.
The biggest announcements came outside of Dublin, from GE (Cork) and Fazzi Healthcare (Limerick).
Other large announcements came from SoftwareOne, Eir and Metaswitch, with MathWorks, AlterPharma, The Packaging Hub, Glanbia, Yroo, BioPharma Engineering, Oneview Healthcare and Mallinckrodt rounding things out with (relatively) smaller offerings.
As if that weren’t enough, this week saw Career Zoo announcing some of the details of their 12th event, to be held at Convention Centre Dublin on 15 October. If you strike out with each of the 1,507 jobs above, perhaps you’ll have better luck at the recruitment and networking event.
Though, maybe, like Rory Carroll at Storm Technology, you’ve already found your passion and your dream career. In that case, perhaps upskilling is more what you’re looking for – and you’re in luck. LinkedIn this week announced a new platform, designed to help professionals maintain and improve their skills, digitally and with precision.
For those whose jobs take a more practical bent, NIBRT and GE have announced a training partnership that will enable biopharma professionals to get to grips with next-gen biologic manufacturing technologies.
Though, of course, some people aren’t quite at that professional level just yet. For those still in college undergoing graduate studies, DCU has launched the Enrich programme, designed to encourage grad students to develop skills that could stand them in good stead for future careers.
No doubt Irish digital marketers will soon be seeking out courses of this ilk for themselves, as we have now learned that our digital marketers just don’t compete by international standards.
Perhaps they’ll take solace in the fact that IT Carlow has just announced Ireland’s first brewing and distilling course. Those marketers just have to wait four years (plus a little extra time for maturation) to drown their sorrows in some stellar Irish-brewed booze.
And, finally, to close with even more good news, this week saw GLEN unveiling the winners of its 2016 Workplace Equality Index Awards, listing the top 10 workplaces in the country for LGBT communities.

5. UK company Metaswitch creating 94 jobs at new Belfast R&D hub
Cloud specialist Metaswitch is opening a centre of excellence in Belfast with hopes of hiring 94 people in the area, with a separate academy aiming to train up 20 graduates as well.
6. Career Zoo gears up for showstopping October event
Now in its 12th run, Career Zoo will descend on The Convention Centre in Dublin for its final jobs networking event of 2016 on 15 October.
7. When a passion for computer games becomes a viable career opportunity

8. LinkedIn’s learning platform takes on skills shelf-life challenge
The challenge of the ever-shrinking shelf-life of skills is about to be overcome by LinkedIn with the launch of a new platform. LinkedIn Learning is the fruit of the company’s $1.5bn acquisition of Lynda.com.
9. NIBRT partners with GE to produce 1,500 ‘bio-professionals’ annually
GE Healthcare has announced a new partnership with the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) to enhance the supply chain of workers in the industry.
10. DCU launches Enrich framework for graduate students to build skills
DCU’s Enrich framework will encourage graduate students to develop skills for further careers in enterprise. Claire O’Connell reports.
11. Irish digital marketers are just average by international standards
Digital skill levels in Ireland are on the decline, in spite of evidence that this is where jobs growth will be for some time, according to the Digital Marketing Institute. Internationally, Irish digital managers are just average in terms of skills and performance.
12. IT Carlow brewing up a storm with new distilling course
The explosion of popularity in beer brewing in Ireland has seen IT Carlow make an early move, creating what it calls a first-of-its-kind brewing and distilling course in the country.
13. Ireland’s top 10 workplaces for LGBT community revealed
GLEN has revealed the 2016 Workplace Equality Index Awards, highlighting the top 10 best places to work for LGBT people.
