Marion Coy, president of Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), has been appointed the new chairperson of Institutes of Technology Ireland (IOTI) for 2008. Coy was formerly head of the School of Business and Humanities in GMIT and has worked in the Institutes of Technology sector since 1981. She has been at the helm of GMIT since 2002. The Institute has a combined student and staff complement of almost 10,000 spread over five campuses – two in Galway City, and in Letterfrack, Castlebar and Mountbellew. Coy outlined her priorities for her year as chairperson, which include developing new career and personal development opportunities for students; ensuring that Institutes of Technology are key players in the implementation of the National Development Plan; and bringing the voice of the Institutes to the forefront in the development of national higher education policy.
