Net award nominee steps down as site sinks

A Sligo-focused website that has just been nominated for the Social Contribution category of the Irish Internet Association (IIA) Net Visionary Awards has had to relinquish any part in the awards because it has failed to receive financial support from its local council.

Sligoweb.com was launched in October 1998 and since then has grown in popularity and credibility and outlived the official county website Sligo.ie, which had the full backing of Sligo Co-operation, the Sligo County Council, the Sligo Enterprise Board and Sligo Chamber of Commerce.

Earlier this week Sligoweb.com was nominated by the IIA alongside Churchtown.net and the Medical Missionaries of Mary’s website for its social contribution.

Site founder Alan Finan said the site was the only one of the finalists that had no financial support or backing.

This morning, a fortnight before the awards are due to take place, Finan revealed that he had to relinquish any part in the Net Visionary Awards due to the lack of support and financial backing he felt was necessary to back up the achievement of being nominated for the award.
