‘Responsible’ is the most overused buzzword in LinkedIn profiles globally this past year, the business social network has revealed.

Rounding out the top 10 words that appear most often in LinkedIn members’ profiles around the world are strategic, creative, effective, patient, expert, organisational, driven, innovative, and analytical.

While these words may certainly apply to the individuals behind the profiles, the risk is that the individuals may fail to stand out among others describing themselves in similar terms, according to Nicole Williams, LinkedIn’s career expert.

“Building your professional brand is an important step to being successful in the workforce,” said Williams. “But if you sound like everyone else, you won’t stand out from other professionals vying for opportunities.”

Williams said LinkedIn users can boost their professional brand by uniquely describing what they have accomplished in their career and backing those descriptions with concrete examples in the form of photos, videos or presentations.

“Providing concrete examples to demonstrate how you are responsible or strategic is always better than just simply using the words,” she said.
