4 million electric vehicles and hybrids on the road by 2030?

10 Nov 2010

By the year 2030, US auto sales could include 4 million plug-in electric and hybrid vehicles, according to research company Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

The research predicts that EVs have the potential to make up 9pc (1.6 million) of auto sales in 2020 and 22pc (4 million) by 2030, although this depends on two factors – a reduction in battery costs and rise in petrol prices.

Fuel prices

It predicts that petroleum prices will have a direct effect on uptake while the cost of electricity is not deemed as important.

Bloomberg says the Nissan LEAF will be targeting an “addressable market” of 11pc while hybrids such as the GM Volt will be targeting 7pc.
