Australia is forging ahead in its fight against greenhouse gas emissions with an announcement it intends to complete an agreement on carbon pricing.
The Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has said there is a need to come to a definite decision on carbon price emissions and that with sufficient consensus it can be legislated, according to Reuters.
Her comments came while the world climate talks took place in Cancun, Mexico and Gillard said the government will bring a decision forward on how to price carbon by a year. She left unclear, however, whether a previous 2013 date for implementation of any scheme would stay in place.
Sydney-based Climate Institute recently conducted research that found in a global context that Australia – the world’s biggest exporter of coal – was trailing in its reduction of carbon emissions.
