Changing from White House to green house

New solar panels are to be installed in The White House in Washington, DC, US, as President Barack Obama sets his targets on a greener future.

The announcement came earlier this week that the solar panels are scheduled for installation on the roof of the White House by the spring of next year – which would provide water and electricity to the executive mansion.

“This project reflects President Obama’s strong commitment to US leadership in solar energy and the jobs it will create here at home. Deploying solar energy technologies across the country will help America lead the global economy for years to come,” said US energy secretary Steven Chu in a statement.

Creating an opportunity in green energy

“President Obama has said the federal government has to lead by example in creating opportunity and jobs in clean energy,” said Nancy Sutley, chair of the White House council on environmental quality.

“By installing solar panels on arguably the most famous house in the country, his residence, the president is underscoring that commitment to lead and the promise and importance of renewable energy in the United States,” added Chu.

Obama will not be the first US president to embrace solar energy, as ex-president Jimmy Carter enjoyed hot water for the White House kitchen thanks to solar power, while George W Bush had solar panels installed to provide heated water for his presidential cabana.
