Greenpeace volunteers have called on Facebook to phase out its use of coal power during a protest outside the company’s Dublin office today.
The group unveiled a banner calling on Facebook to change the type of energy the company uses.
Facebook’s electricity providers generate most of their energy from burning coal to power their data centres in the US states of Oregon and North Carolina.
More than 600,000 Greenpeace supporters, in an online campaign, have called on Facebook to stop using coal power, Greenpeace International executive director Kumi Naidoo has stated.
Facebook is also being targeted by Greenpeace because the organisation believes forward-thinking firms, such as the social networking giant, should set an example by using renewable energy.
Greenpeace has set Earth Day, 22 April, as the deadline for Facebook to ‘unfriend coal’ and instead power up its data centres with renewables.
