11 Oct 2010

President Mary McAleese is visiting Denmark this week to highlight and promote opportunities for increased co-operation between Irish and Danish business interests, with a focus on renewable energy sources and tourism.

As part of her itinerary on the three-day visit, McAleese will travel to Samsø, where she will be briefed on the community’s success in converting the island from oil and gas energy to renewable energy sources, including wind turbines, solar cells and biomass plants.

McAleese will also meet with representatives from Shannon Development involved in the Irish-Danish Biomob initiative which identifies biomass synergies between regions. This will be followed by a visit to Samsø Energy Academy, which has a global reputation in the field of sustainable energy for small islands and peripheral regions.

Following these visits, McAleese will address a business lunch attended by Danish clients of Enterprise Ireland, Tourism Ireland, IDA and Bord Bia.
