A Scottish wind farm is set to get a power boost of more than 200 megawatts (MW) with the addition of 75 extra turbines, as well as other works.
The Whitelee Windfarm, Scotland – already Europe’s largest wind farm – with the added turbines and the resulting energy generated will be connected to the UK national grid by 2012.
The work will include the construction of access roads, substation and control buildings, and the wind turbine generator bases, which will be fitted with turbines by Alstom.
180,000 homes
Whitelee Windfarm opened in 2008 and covers 55 sq kilometres of Eaglesham Moor, near Glasgow. It has 140 turbines which can generate 322MW of electricity, enough to power 180,000 homes.
The world’s largest offshore wind farm in Thanet, Kent, UK, was launched earlier this year and 100 turbines have a total capacity of 300MW – increasing the amount of energy generated in the UK from offshore winds to 1,314MW – while the world’s largest wind farm is the Roscoe Wind Farm, which generates around 780 MW of energy, in the state of Texas, US.
