Apple quietly reveals tool to deregister your phone number from iMessage

The end of disappearing text messages if you switch from iPhone is nigh! This is thanks to a new web tool that Apple has quietly published.

Apple has quietly released a new too that lets you deregister your phone number from its iMessage system, making it easier to switch between iOS and other smartphones.

The problem of disappearing text messages is one that had bedevilled smartphone users in the few years since iMessage first came available.

Users who switched devices sometimes missed important messages from friends.

This is because Apple continued to route texts through iMessage even after they had moved to other devices.

Because iMessage is proprietary to Apple many users didn’t realise that in order to get their messages to their new device they had to entirely deregister their old device from Apple accounts.

Apple has published a new tool to make the process easier for smartphone users which shows a number of steps they need to take, including the transmission of a 6-digit code to confirm the deregistration.

It also provides a step-by-step guide on what to do to turn iMessage off if you still have your old iPhone.
