Virgin Media has revealed that it has made 360Mbps speeds available across its network of close to 750,000 homes across Ireland

As broadband momentum finally begins in Ireland, cable broadband provider Virgin Media has revealed that it has made 360Mbps speeds available across its network of close to 750,000 homes.

Virgin said that customers who select its new 360Mbps broadband will also receive free calls to landlines and mobiles in 22 countries for €30 per month for the first four months.

Over the past three years, data usage of the Virgin Media network has grown by 300pc and by more than 1,200pc over the past six years.

Before Christmas, the new CEO of Virgin Media in Ireland, Tony Hanway, said that a major investment plan worth hundreds of millions of euros is on the cards to improve and expand the Virgin Media network in Ireland in the years ahead.

The increased speeds come just as the Irish Government has kicked off a tendering process for its EU-supported €275m National Broadband Plan to connect 600,000 homes and 100,000 businesses in broadband-deprived areas with a minimum speed of 30Mbps.

Virgin Media has more than 375,900 broadband subscribers capable of receiving between 150Mbps and 500Mbps broadband. Some 750,000 homes are passed by its network and are now capable of receiving speeds of up to 360Mbps.

“360Mbps broadband is at the core of our next-generation Wi-Fi and telephony modem, otherwise known as the Virgin Media Hub,” said Bill Blake, Virgin Media’s head of commercial and products.

“The Virgin Media Hub has been designed with ease-of-use in mind, featuring a simplified LED display and an install wizard that enables our customers to set up and customise their home Wi-Fi service quickly and easily.”
