Former Eircell chief Stephen Brewer has been headhunted by Denis O’Brien to spearhead the Irish multimillionaire’s new Digicel operation in Trinidad and Tobago. Brewer is expected to start on 1 November 2005.
Digicel was granted a licence to operate a mobile network in Trinidad and Tobago back in June following a competitive spectrum auction.
Brewer joined Eircell and chief executive in 1995 and later paved the way for its sale to Vodafone Group in 2001 in one of Ireland’s largest corporate deals. He left the Irish operation in September 2001 to take up a senior role within Vodafone UK.
Brewer has held senior commercial posts with France Telecom Mobile, O2, Vodafone UK, and most recently Cable & Wireless Caribbean where he headed up its Jamaican operation in direct competition with Digicel.
Commenting on the appointment, Denis O’Brien, founder and chairman of the Digicel Group, said: “Stephen’s proven leadership and experience in the telecommunications industry position him to successfully lead Digicel to become the number one mobile telecommunications company in Trinidad and Tobago.”
