Citrix unveils virtual desktop app for iPhone and iPod touch

6 May 2009

Citrix has made its Receiver application available on the Apple’s iTunes App Store. The application gives iPhone and iPod touch users the ability to access to their Windows applications and documents while on the move.

The new Citrix Receiver software allows IT departments to deliver virtual desktops and applications on demand to any device in any location.

As long as employees have Citrix Receiver, IT departments no longer need to worry whether they are delivering to a PC in the office, a laptop at home, or an iPhone on the road.

This approach radically simplifies desktop management for IT and gives end users far more flexibility and independence in how and where they work.

“We are delighted to offer this capability to the millions of iPhone and iPod touch customers, giving them the same cool user experience they’ve come to expect from their devices,” said Mick Hollison, vice-president XenApp product marketing, Citrix Systems.

“For companies who already use Citrix XenApp, Citrix Receiver provides a simple method for accessing desktops and applications wherever employees are located.

“Whether they are using their desktop, laptop or smart phone, Citrix Receiver ensures a consistent, high-definition experience for accessing applications, and allows IT to deliver applications as a service that is scalable and always available.”

Citrix Receiver is a lightweight software client that resides on user devices, like PCs, Macs, and smart phones, and is the self-service user entry point to the Citrix Delivery Centre product family.

Citrix Receiver for iPhone and iPod touch makes use of the innovative multi-touch user interface of the devices, offering the ability to zoom, pan, click and scroll within documents.

Leveraging the Citrix Doc Finder, users can quickly find, view, edit, save and send business documents from their iPhone and iPod touch. Since these documents are stored in the data centre and delivered over an encrypted link, data and applications always remain completely secure.

As a part of Citrix Receiver for the iPhone and iPod touch, Citrix is also introducing new App Viewer technology that displays just the information a user actually needs – for example, viewing dashboards with dynamic graphs while in a meeting or away from a computer.

The combination iPhone and iPod touch App Viewer and Doc Finder allows users to view apps and edit any kind of business document on a small screen.

Citrix Receiver for iPhone is available for free from the iTunes Apps Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore/.

A cloud-based demonstration is available to any iPhone or iPod touch user. After downloading the free Citrix Receiver app, users click on a link to receive credentials to an open demo system located at www.citrixcloud.net
