Wireless networks are being deployed in more than 200 supermarkets belonging to BWG Foods up and down Ireland. So far 53 Spar, Eurospar, Mace and XL stores in 16 counties have been kitted out with Wi-Fi, with 150 more stores to follow in the months ahead.
The service has been installed in Spar, Eurospar, Mace and XL stores in Leitrim, Clare, Kerry, Cork, Carlow, Meath and throughout Dublin city centre and suburbs.
“This is an important new service as part of our ongoing digital strategy because our stores are much more than a place to shop; they’re a meeting place for coffee with friends, or a working lunch, so we wanted to help our customers stay connected,” Veronica Sullivan, head of IT at BWG Foods, explained.
“Earlier this year, we began rolling out a contactless payment facility for customers and this partnership marks another step in reaching the ever-important digital consumer,” Sullivan added.
Nationwide Wi-Fi hotspot network
To access the service, customers simply need to log onto the Eircom WiFiHub page. First-time users need to register to use the service; once this has been completed users can automatically log on at any Eircom WiFiHub hotspot.
Users can also download the free Eircom WiFiHub app, which is available from the Android and Apple iTunes stores.
Eircom broadband, eMobile and Meteor customers can access the internet for free at any of the WiFiHub-enabled stores.
Eircom landline and non-Eircom customers can also avail of the service: the first 10 minutes are free and then there is a flat rate charge of €1 up until midnight that day.
“Rolling out the Eircom WiFiHub service is a high priority for us and we are particularly delighted to partner with BWG Foods to offer the service in its stores,” Eircom’s director of products and strategy Elaine Robinson explained.
“BWG Foods has a strong retail presence in Ireland which is key as we continue to roll out the Eircom WiFiHub service throughout the country. Currently we have over 1,400 Wi-Fi hotspots around the country providing convenient and easy access to the internet, which is a priority for people in today’s technology-based world. We are committed to ensuring Ireland has a robust Wi-Fi network,” Robinson added.
