Eircom has announced the locations across Ireland that will benefit from Phase 3 of its fibre broadband rollout. Phase 3 will pass 125,000 homes and businesses in eight counties in Ireland.
The Phase 3 communities include Churchfield (Cork City); Waterford City; Kilkenny City; Sligo Town; Mullingar (Co Westmeath); Tralee (Co Kerry); Westport (Co Mayo); Crown Alley, Dolphin’s Barn, Nutley and Beggars Bush, Coolock (Dublin City); and Balbriggan, (Co Dublin).
Work is expected to commence this winter with the aim to complete the construction phase by Easter 2013.
In August 2011, Eircom named the locations under the first phase of its fibre rollout plan. The communities included Mervue (Galway); Douglas (Cork); Dooradoyle (Limerick); Tallaght, Ballyboden, Palmerstown, Swords, and Donabate (Co Dublin); Clonee (Co Meath); and Letterkenny (Co Donegal).
Once Phase 1 was completed, fibre passed more than 100,000 homes and businesses within the selected areas, providing speeds of 40Mbps and beyond.
In April of this year, Eircom announced Phase 2 of the project, including the following communities: Shantalla (Galway); Quaker Rd (Cork); Limerick City; Rathedmond (Sligo); Ballincollig (Cork); Belcamp, Dun Laoghaire, and Rochestown (Co Dublin); Ennis (Co Clare); Drogheda (Co Louth); Bray (Co Wicklow); Ballina and Castlebar (Co Mayo).
Eircom said once Phase 2 is completed, fibre will pass 250,000 homes and businesses within the 27 selected areas.
Eircom’s new CEO Herb Hribar said today’s announcement brings to 40 the number of locations announced to date and about 350,000 premises will be able to avail of the new 40Mbps services when the network launches next year.
“Eircom is actively working on phase 3 of our planned network investment,” Hribar said.
“The first phase is now complete, reaching 100,000 homes, and we have already commenced work on Phase 2 locations. We will continue to build this network to ensure that as many premises as possible will be able to avail of the new services provided by various operators when the network is launched,” he added.
