A high-speed WiMAX broadband and phone network has been launched in Leixlip, Co Kildare, incorporating the Intel Ireland Campus, Irish company Imagine Communications Group has announced.

The new fourth-generation wireless technology provides fast internet and phone access at home and on the move for 50pc less than the cost charged by current providers, the company said.

Intel Ireland, based in Leixlip, is one of Imagine’s partners, along with Motorola, in the €100-million roll out of WiMAX across Ireland.

Imagine said the the roll out of its service will save Leixlip homeowners and locally-based Intel staff at least €300 a year on their phone and broadband bills compared to some competitors and that the new network will deliver the fastest and most reliable broadband internet ever seen in Leixlip, the Leinster Leader reported.

Areas that now have access to the network include Leixlip town centre, Catherinestown, Kellystown, Confey, Cooldrinagh, St Wolstans and Kilmackredock, Imagine said.

The company has pledged to expand WiMAX coverage in the Kildare region this year.
