Meteor to cut mobile broadband roaming rate by 90pc

5 May 2011

Following its drop of roaming charges for calls and texts, Meteor will drop its roaming data charges for using the internet on mobile phones from €10.24 per MB to 99 cents per MB on 18 May.

Speaking to Siliconrepublic.com, Bill Blake, head of consumer marketing at Meteor confirmed they will be making a 90pc price cut to their data roaming charges for using the internet on mobile devices abroad in less than two weeks.

“There’s still a gap on the 99-cent data roaming rate versus our domestic rate but it’s a very strong value message to our customers and it’s the best value in the marketplace, as well,” said Blake.

This drop reflects how much lower data charges have become, particularly since the increase in popularity in smartphones, which Blake acknowledges.

“The data rate domestically has come down significantly over the last 12 or 18 months with Meteor and across the market. It’s very important that we address that from a roaming point of view,” said Blake.

Expensive roaming costs have caused holiday makers frustration for the last few years, which Blake said Meteor is addressing.

“We’ve been talking to our customers on an ongoing basis and roaming is an area of significant frustration for them over the last couple of years,” said Blake.

The move comes after Meteor removed roaming charges for calls and texts for 39 locations in Europe.

Prepay customers will pay 29 cents per minute to make a call and 12 cents to send a text, with a 9 cents call set up fee. Bill pay customers will pay 25 cents a minute to make a call and 10 cents per text.
