RTÉ releases Radio 1 and 2fm apps for iPhone

14 Dec 2009

RTÉ has just released two apps for the iPhone and iPod touch via the iTunes App Store – one for Radio 1 and another for 2fm.

The RTÉ Radio 1 app offers four different functions: ‘On Air’ for streaming live audio, ‘News’ for access to RTE.ie news, ‘Podcasts’ for podcast versions of previously broadcast shows and a ‘Contact’ section for getting in touch with various presenters by emailing a message straight into the studio.

The ‘News’ function has RTE.ie’s mobile news service but also serves up the Aertel pages.

The ‘Just Played’ function

The RTÉ 2fm app has an extra function in the form of ‘Just Played’, that lists the last 10 songs played plus links to download them on iTunes. You see, rather than simply streaming live audio, the 2fm app also shows what songs are currently playing, as well as the option to link to and download specific songs from the iTunes Store.

“These apps for iPhone and iPod touch are our latest new media offering for listeners. As a public service broadcaster, it’s our ambition to provide listeners with as many ways as possible to listen to radio so that they can listen whenever and however they want,” said JP Coakley, director of operations, RTÉ Radio.

“We’re particularly pleased to be able to develop an app that makes all of the great content from RTÉ.ie available via radio streams.”
