Most (90pc) of Gen Y checks their smartphones for updates in email, text messaging and social media sites, often before they even get out of bed, the 2012 Cisco Connected World Technology Report suggests.

InsightExpress surveyed 1,800 college students and young professionals aged 18 to 30 across 18 countries, resulting in the report that examines how Generation Y uses the internet and mobile devices to connect with the world around them.

The report reveals their behaviour and attitudes about the creation, access and privacy of the huge amounts of data sensors, monitors, video cameras, smartphones, and other connected devices generate daily.

For Gen Y, information is constant and immediate. Twenty-nine per cent of survey respondents said they check their smartphones so constantly that they lose count.

This constant connection bodes well for employers, as it demonstrates that the future’s workforce is more agile, more informed and more responsive than any previous generation.
