More than 300,000 iPads sold on first day

On sale for less than 24 hours in the US, the iPad has shifted more than 300,000 units, as Apple announced the numbers sold as of midnight on Saturday.

“It feels great to have the iPad launched into the world — it’s going to be a game changer,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

“iPad users, on average, downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad.”

While these numbers sound impressive, this includes both pre-order units and units shipped to channel partners, and analysts have expected somewhere in the region of 400,000 to 500,000 to be sold, with Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray having predicted somewhere between 600,000 and 700,000, according to the Wall Street Journal.
