Intel’s plan to be the centre of the internet of things (IoT) technology is continuing with the purchase of Lantiq, a company that develops home broadband networks and connected homes.
The company based in Munich, Germany have been on Intel’s radar for some time now and the deal announced today will be contributing to the company’s IoT ambitions by allowing them to “broaden its offering to other gateway markets, including DSL, Fiber, LTE, retail and IoT smart routers,” according to their statement on the acquisition.
The team is expected to be merged within Intel’s existing IoT development division with plans to develop, in particular, home cloud services and new applications capable of using the integration of house’s appliances controllable through a home-owner’s device or multiple devices.
Last December, the company revealed IoT Platform which to facilitate their push towards the technology, while also announcing new software and hardware that fall under the IoT scope including the Wind River Edge Management System, which provides cloud connectivity to facilitate device configuration, file transfers, data capture and rules-based data analysis and response.
The company have also spoken of how they foresee Dublin as being the world’s first IoT city with a number of initiatives planned with Dublin City Council to make Dublin the most densely sensored city in the world.
“By 2018, we expect more than 800m broadband connected households worldwide,” said Kirk Skaugen, senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s Client Computing Group.
“The combination of our cable gateway business with Lantiq’s technology and talent can allow global service providers to introduce new home computing experiences and enable consumers to take advantage of a more smart and connected home.”
