Virgin Media grows broadband and TV customer base in Q3

In its first Q3 quarter as Virgin Media, the cable TV and broadband player formerly known as UPC, grew subscribers to 1.1m in Ireland.

Marking its first Q3 quarter as Virgin Media Ireland, the cable TV and broadband player formerly known as UPC reported an increase of 12,200 broadband subscriptions and 21,600 phone subscriptions, bringing its total subscriber base to 1.1m customers.

The company rebranded as Virgin Media in Ireland in recent months and has appointed former O2 Ireland CEO Tony Hanway as chief executive of its Irish operations. Also in recent months, Virgin Media acquired commercial broadcaster TV3 for €87m.

In its third quarter results, Virgin Media reported a total of 1.1m service subscriptions, which includes 371,300 broadband subscribers, up 3.4pc year-on-year.

Total phone subscriptions were up 6.4pc to 357,900 and the company said it has 318,300 digital cable TV subscribers.

Virgin Media enters mobile market

The company also entered the mobile market as an MVNO and said this morning that 1,000 customers signed up prior to the commercial launch of the service.

“Our business division continues to drive positive results with revenues up by 31pc in the third quarter across all business market segments ranging from SOHOs (small office/home office) and SMEs to medium and large enterprises, wholesale and Wi-Fi provider Bitbuzz,” said Virgin Media Ireland CFO Carol Grennan.

“In addition, we’re pleased to have upgraded over 60 businesses to our new carrier-grade Ethernet service, which has earned Carrier Ethernet 2.0 certification from the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF).This provides significant commercial benefits to our business customers and demonstrates our commitment to the continuous development of our network.”
