21pc customer growth rate for AIB online banking

Internet users made more than €400m worth of transactions through AIB’s website in June, the bank has revealed.

Growth in the number of customers using AIB online services is currently 21pc per year and the number of logins to its internet banking services is on course to beat 30 million, which would be a 20pc increase of more than five million on last year.

According to AIB, one of the most frequently used services on its site is the bill-pay option, with credit cards perhaps unsurprisingly topping the list of significant debts to be paid at just over €400. Mobile top-ups are also extremely popular and usage levels are 30pc year on year, AIB said. The average top-up value is now €15.36, up about 50c from January.

The hour between 9am and 10am is the most popular time for customers to visit the site. Most loan applications through AIB Internet Banking are made on Mondays and Tuesdays, the bank said.

AIB said it intends to introduce further services through its site in the coming months. Late last year it launched a facility to make international payments and one-off national payments via the internet. These involve the use of a code card which is a paper card containing 100 codes, unique to each customer’s registration number. To complete a transaction, customers are asked to enter a random code from the list and each code is only used once. AIB said that more than 60,000 cards are currently being actively used.
