Some 30 jobs are to be made redundant at Motorola’s Cork operation, siliconrepublic.com has learned. The losses follow a strategic review of the operation and are considerably less than the 150 job losses originally feared.
While the company would not comment on the actual figure for jobs lost, an informed industry source said that the actual figure was “close to the 30 mark”.
In April, it emerged that 150 jobs were endangered at Motorola’s Cork operation as plans for a global rationalisation programme began to emerge.
Motorola commented this afternoon: “When this story broke, Motorola did not comment on the number of staff potentially affected because it was committed to a positive engagement process with its staff.
“This process of engagement has now concluded. It has resulted in a very small number of voluntary redundancies — far, far fewer than the number reported by the press at the time.”
Motorola employs 500 people at the Mahon, Co Cork operation across a number of roles and a further 10 people in sales and marketing in Dublin.
