Communications union to meet over Eircom jobs

6 Jul 2010

The national executive of the Communications Workers Union is due to meet later today as concern grows over the possibility of further job cuts at Eircom.

Eircom is proceeding with its previously announced plan of cutting 1,200 jobs by March 2011 through a voluntary redundancy programme. Speaking yesterday, the CEO of Eircom Paul Donovan said the company was well on its way to achieving this target.

Commenting on speculation over the weekend that there will be further job cuts at the incumbent telecoms operator, Donovan said Eircom needed to refit for the future and that it was going to have to be a more efficient, lower-cost company.

He added that whether this could be achieved from fewer jobs or changes in work practices was still being discussed with unions.
