An overview of the week in deals in the Irish technology sector, including the creation of new jobs at 3 and Hertz.

Mobile network 3 to create 90 retail jobs

Mobile network 3 is creating 90 jobs in retail nationwide this year as a result of its opening 28 new shops.

The company, which has 470,000 users, 22 existing 3Stores and 200 independent retailers, is planning to invest nearly €5 million in the expansion, which has been designed to increase 3’s retail footprint to maximum effect in the most cost-effective way.

Hertz to create 100 jobs in Dublin

Car hire company Hertz has announced 100 new jobs at its European shared services centre in Swords, Co Dublin.

Hertz is expanding its international operations in the city, with support from IDA Ireland. The new jobs are a result of this growth.

The new jobs will be filled over the next year.

Zynga buys social-gaming start-up

Social-gaming company Zynga has signed an agreement to acquire Serious Business, fellow creators of social games on Facebook. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

As part of the agreement, Serious Business employees will join Zynga at the company’s San Francisco headquarters.

Irish energy firm inks green power deal with M&S

Marks & Spencer in Ireland has signed a renewable electricity contract with Irish energy provider Energia.

The new contract runs from April 2010 until 2013, as M&S seeks to achieve 100pc green electricity generation for its stores, offices and distribution centres in the Republic of Ireland.

Cork-based software firm signs Malta deal

Intact Software, a Cork-based high-tech company, has signed a partnership deal with Maltese company Technosoft to sell its business software in Malta.

Intact, a business management software package, developed in Dundalk and sold in Cork, has been showing steady growth across Ireland, Europe and the Middle East through its network of resellers.

Vodafone signs major managed mobile services deal with Oracle

Vodafone’s Global Enterprise division has secured a major contract to manage business software giant Oracle’s mobile services needs across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

Vodafone Global Enterprise, the dedicated division of Vodafone that manages the communication needs of its largest Enterprise customers, will supply mobile services management, mobile voice and data services to more than 16,000 Oracle employees in the EMEA billed on a fixed-fee, per-user basis.

Under the agreement, Oracle is set to achieve greater cost efficiencies, benefiting from the enhanced transparency offered from predictable flat-rate fee structures for mobility and managed services.

Micron to acquire Numonyx for US$1.27 billion

Micron Technology is acquiring Numonyx, one the largest makers of flash in the world.

The two companies have said they have reached an agreement in which Micron will acquire Numonyx in an all-stock transaction valued at about US$1.27 billion.

Irish hotel tech firm opens US office amid record revenues

Bookassist, the Dublin-based award-winning booking technology and online strategy partner for hotels, has announced the opening of a US office in Phoenix, Arizona.

This office marks Bookassist’s seventh international office.
