Eircom price changes will see average bills rise 3pc

31 May 2010

Incumbent telecoms operator Eircom has announced a series of changes to its call pricing that it says will result in average bills for its customers increasing by 3pc.

Eircom said today that from 1 July it will be introducing call ‘rounding up’ for all ‘out of bundle’ minutes. This means that all minutes outside of package/bundle minutes will be rounded up to the next minute instead of being billed on a per second basis, as is currently the case.

The telco will also be introducing a new set rate of flat day, evening and weekend charges for calls made to O2, Vodafone and Meteor mobiles from its fixed lines. Previously the rate applied to calls from Eircom landlines to mobiles varied according to the mobile operator.

Eircom also said today that for customers on its small business packages a call set-up fee of 4.80c (excluding VAT) will replace the minimum call fee of 5.33c (excluding VAT).

The telco said that as broadband, line rental and bundle subscription prices are unaffected by today’s price changes, this means that more than half a million customers who only avail of the call minutes offered within their bundle will see no increase in charges.

Commenting on today’s announcement, Stephen Beynon, group managing director, Consumer and Small Business, Eircom said: “We understand that any price change in the current climate is a concern to people. A significant portion of our customer base will be unaffected by today’s changes and those half a million customers on bundled packages will continue to get very good value. On average, bills will increase by approximately 3pc.”

Further pricing details are available on the Eircom website. Customers can also contact Eircom’s Customer Information Service on 1800 203 105 (8am-8pm, Monday to Friday) or its Business Service Centre on 1800 601 701 (8am-6pm Monday to Friday).
