Facebook to open office in India

Social networking site Facebook is to open its second office outside the US; in addition to the Dublin, Ireland, office there will soon be a new operations centre in the city of Hyderabad in southern India.

This is Facebook’s second such announcement around global operations in the last week following news it plans to invest in a new operations office in Austin, Texas.

The Hyderabad office, in conjunction with the Dublin one, is part of Facebook’s plan to “provide better round-the-clock, multi-lingual support” through having staff on call in several different time zones.

“The new offices come at a significant time in our international growth,” said Don Faul, a director of global online operations at Facebook.

He said that 70pc of Facebook users now live outside the US, accessing the service in more than 70 different languages.

“In India alone, we’ve seen rapid growth and now have more than 8 million people there actively connecting on Facebook with their friends, family and other people they know, both within India and around the globe,” added Faul.
