HSE in €350k storage deal

23 May 2005

The Shared Services Eastern Region (SSER) division of the Health Service Executive (HSE) has signed two contracts valued at €350k with Sabeo Storage Solutions for the supply of a storage area network (SAN) and the implementation of a backup solution.

The first contract is for the supply of a SAN, which will link all of the SSER’s Windows, UNIX and Hewlett-Packard (HP) OpenVMS servers.

The second contract is for the implementation of a centralised backup solution. Both projects will be hosted at SSER’s data centre at the HP facility in Citywest Business Campus in County Dublin.

“Our investment in the SAN project has allowed us to shift to a single point of management for our ongoing storage requirements,” said Pat Thornton, IT manager with SSER.

“Similarly the centralised backup solution will eventually simplify the management of the daily backup, restore functions and improve quality of the service to benefit both the SSER and our customers,” Thornton added.

The HSE took over full operational responsibility for running the country’s health and personal social services in 2005. National Shared Services will be responsible for delivering efficiencies and greater effectiveness in the administration of the health service through transforming processing activities in finance, procurement, ICT, human resources and the Primary Care Reimbursement Service.

Commenting on the project implementations, Paul Goti, sales director with Sabeo Technologies, said: “The solutions involved integrating components from a number of different vendors, HP, Cisco and EMC/Legato.

“One of the more challenging aspects of the projects was, linking an OpenVMS cluster remotely to the SAN and this was installed without a hitch,” Goti added.
