Private equity firm Platinum Equity has acquired Quark, the developer of the QuarkXPress desktop publishing software, for an undisclosed sum.

Platinum Equity, a private equity firm that specialises in mergers and acquisitions, has already begun to transition Quark to new ownership, said Brian Wall, the partner at Platinum Equity who led the team pursuing the purchase.

The Platinum Equity operations team is working with the Quark management team to focus on Quark’s core markets and create an acquisition strategy focused on expanding the breadth and depth of Quark’s product capabilities and geographic coverage.

“Platinum Equity is well-positioned to help us continue to execute our dynamic publishing vision through their market reach, merger and acquisition experience, and operational support. This is the natural next step for Quark’s evolution," said Raymond Schiavone, president and CEO at Quark.

Denver, Colorado-based Quark provides a set of software applications that enable the creation, management, publication and delivery of content across a variety of media including print, email, web, social media, as well as e-readers, tablets and mobile devices.

The company was founded under the name “Quark Engineering” in 1981.

Tom Gores founded Platinum Equity in 1995, and the company has since completed more than 115 acquisitions.
