Samsung Electronics acquires Boxee

4 Jul 2013

Samsung Electronics has acquired Boxee Inc, a start-up that provides set-top boxes to record broadcasts and stream online video, for an undisclosed sum.

Boxee also makes iOS and Android apps so users can stream videos on their phones or tablets, as well as making the software that powers its connected TV box, Bloomberg reported.

Under the deal, Boxee can help Samsung develop its internet-enabled devices.

“Samsung has acquired key talent and assets from Boxee,” a spokeswoman for Samsung said in a statement. “This will help us continue to improve the overall user experience across our connected devices.”

Boxee Inc is based in New York.
