It was another successful night for Siliconrepublic.com as a site not very far from these shores picked up the Best Science and Technology award at Web Awards 2015.

There was plenty of competition at the Web Awards 2015 across many categories, but Siliconrepublic.com’s win cements the site as something of a favourite for the award given that in seven of the last eight years, it has won the top gong.

In total, there were nine finalists who made the Best Science and Technology Site category, but Siliconrepublic.com came out on top with managing editor Elaine Burke on hand with members of the team to accept the award.

Held at the RDS in Dublin, the event saw the satirical website Waterford Whispers receive some of the biggest praise, picking up both the Best Daily Web Only Award as well as the most coveted award of the night, the Grand Prix Award.

Commenting on the win, Siliconrepublic.com’s editor John Kennedy said: “Silicon Republic has always been the sum of its parts — everything we do is down to teamwork and a dedication to ensuring that our readers in Ireland and around the world are kept informed about the latest innovations, trends and breakthroughs. As we always say, technology is a 365-day-a-year business. The Award is a huge honour and only encourages us to do better.”

Perhaps the best speech of the night goes to the winner of the An Suíomh Gaeilge Is Fearr, nos.ie, whose editor delivered an impressive bilingual speech on the importance of its success.

Founder of the Web Awards, Damien Mulley, spoke at the podium near the conclusion of the event, announcing that big changes to the Awards are afoot, with this year being the last in the current format.

From next year, there will be two award ceremonies on offer, one of which will be for content and another specifically for e-commerce sites and apps.
