By 2pm today some 95,370 applications were made to some 800 registrars in 25 countries, siliconrepublic.com has learned. Not surprisingly the No 1 most requested domain name was Sex.eu, followed by Hotel.eu and Travel.eu.

According to Orlaith Finnegan, communications officer with EU Internet, some 80,000 applications were received in the first hour.

“Interestingly, Dublin.eu and other Irish geographical names have not been reserved by the Department of Communications or the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) despite the fact that EURid’s registration policy states that member states have been allowed to submit a list of broadly recognised names with regard to geographical and/or geopolitical concepts that affect their political or territorial organisation,” Finnegan said.

The top 10 most requested domain names were: Sex.eu, Hotel.eu, Travel.eu, Jobs.eu, Hotels.eu, Casino.eu, Poker.eu, Golf.eu, Business.eu, Shopping.eu, Porn.eu and Music.eu.

By 1.55pm today there were 620 unique applications corresponding to geographical indications or denominations of origin; 7,225 by public bodies, 66,852 national trade marks and 20,673 community or international trade marks.
