A strong first-quarter performance saw Virgin Media meet its targets and analyst forecasts, noting revenues of £982m, up 5.7pc on the previous year.

The pay television and broadband company added 20,200 new cable customers in the three-month period.

The company also said its customers were paying a record amount for the time of year as its momentum continued.

Revenues from its mobile phone division were up 3.8pc, as more customers take up contracts.

The number of households which buy their TV, broadband, fixed-line and mobile phone services from Virgin increased by about 1pc to 12pc.

Meanwhile, the company said it was ready to begin testing internet speeds of up to 1.5Gb in east London. If successful, this would give the firm the world’s fastest cable broadband.
