Wattics, the energy management start-up that has come up with a software solution to help businesses track and manage the energy consumption of appliances and machines, has been shortlisted for the Dublin regional finals in the emerging company category in this year’s InterTradeIreland Seedcorn Business Competition.
Wattics has created a device that can clip onto any off-the-shelf smart meter in industrial and commercial sites and can diagnose power usage. The system aims to help businesses reduce their energy costs.
Founded by Dr Antonio Ruzzelli, Anthony Schoofs and Alex Sintoni as a spin-out from UCD’s School of Computer Science and Informatics and the CLARITY Centre for Web Sensor Technologies, Wattics is now based at NovaUCD.
Its solution requires a single meter at the mains to dissemble the total energy consumption by appliance. Wattics has a customer base that includes Pfizer, KPMG, ESB, Dublin Airport, Office of Public Works, the K Club and Cork Institute of Technology.
As for the InterTradeIreland competition, it has a total prize fund of €280,000. The competition was open to all independent companies incorporated in Ireland or Northern Ireland in the seed, start-up or early stages of business development.
The shortlisted finalists have been broken down into four regions, with two categories in each: Dublin, Northern Ireland, Munster and Connaught and Leinster.
Eight companies will be chosen to pitch in the final stage of the competition on 28 November. The other two companies shortlisted alongside Wattics in the emerging company category are Hanpak and SilverCloud Health.
