Research released this week in a Global Wind Energy Council report says that wind energy could meet over one fifth of global demand in 20 years.

The Global Wind Energy Outlook, the latest report from the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and Greenpeace, which was unveiled at the Wind Power 2010 conference in Beijing, China, states that the emergence of wind energy across the globe could lead to significant use of the energy source.

According to the report, 12pc of global demand could be met by wind energy by 2020 and,“with the right political commitments”, almost 22pc by 2030.

The report predicated that Chinese wind capacity could top 253GW by 2020 if the state continues its drive develop clean energy.
