The Chinese government has announced plans to implement several new hydropower projects.

As it states on the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China has approved the construction of a 2.6 gigawatt (GW) hydropower project in the Sichuan province, according to Reuters.

The move comes as no surprise as the Chinese government has recently pledged to increase the amount of non-fossil fuels in its overall primary energy use to 15pc by 2020 in order to meet carbon targets.

The NDRC also said it has approved two more hydropower operations – the Guan’di hydropower station (2.4GW) and the Tongzilin hydropower project (600 megawatt)– by September.
