Fujitsu Laboratories has developed a new hybrid energy harvesting device that generates electricity from either heat or light. The technology was launched at IEEE in San Francisco recently.
Energy harvesting, which is the process for collecting energy from the surrounding environment and converting it to electricity, is fast gaining interest as a future next-generation energy source.
Because there is no need for electrical wiring or battery replacements, this development also has the potential to enable the use of ambient energy in the forms of light, vibration, heat and radio waves, etc, says Fujitsu Laboratories, which aims to commercialise this technology by 2015.
The energy harvesting technology was presented at IEEE 2010 in San Francisco between 6 and 8 December 2010.
