New Donegal Energia wind farm to power 70,000 homes a year

A new wind farm to be built by Energia at a cost of €145m will aim to generate 255GW/hr of renewable energy each year, which is capable of powering as many as 70,000 homes in Donegal.

The energy supplier has reached financial closure on the Meenadreen Extension wind farm, which will see 38 Nordex N90 turbines provide much-needed energy assurance to the country’s most northerly county.

The deal will also see the construction of a new €11m substation that will further strengthen the local network’s ability to handle large increases in demand during the year.

Energia’s operational wind-farm portfolio includes both its own wind farms and those from third-party wind farms contracted to the energy supplier under power purchase agreements creating a total energy output of 795MWs of renewable power.

This new addition is expected to increase this by a further 300MWs, with future expansions also expected.

Peter Baillie, managing director of Energia Renewables, said of the completion of the deal: “We are delighted to reach this significant milestone in the development of our flagship 95MW Meenadreen Extension wind farm project. The development of this new wind farm is a very positive step forward for renewable energy in Ireland and this is something that is very important to us.

“We’ve received a lot of support from the local community and we’re very grateful for this.”
