Tesla’s Model X sports utility vehicle has arrived and motoring may be changed forever. The machine, which can comfortably carry seven adults, can go from 0-60mph in 3.2 seconds, which is faster than most premium-brand sports cars like Ferrari or Lamborghini.
Tesla’s Model X comes with falcon wing doors in the rear that can open in tight spaces. The SUV can travel up to 250 miles on a single charge.
However, it is quite pricey at US$130,000 for early adopters.
Tesla has emphasised the safety-first aspects of the new vehicle.
A floor-mounted battery lowers the centre of gravity so the chances of the vehicle rolling over are slim. The battery structure also protects the vehicle’s body from side impacts.
Without a petrol or diesel engine, the large front trunk on the Model X acts as a giant impact-absorbing crumple zone.
You have to wonder if it is a spacecraft or a car in terms of some of the technologies on board.
Medical grade HEPA filters remove pollen, bacteria, viruses and pollution from the cabin.
Cameras and sonar and radar sensors continually scan the surrounding roadway with real-time feedback to avoid collisions and even at highway speeds Model X will automatically apply brakes in an emergency.
Designed for speed, the aerodynamic design of the Model X makes drag 20pc less than the next competing SUV.
Officially, the Model X can go from zero to 60 in 3.8 seconds but when the Ludicrous Speed Upgrade is applied it can go from zero to 60 in 3.2 seconds.
The Model X has a 155mph top speed.
Internally, potential buyers can choose configurations in six-seat and seven-seat layouts.
