AIB has performed an Ireland and UK first by introducing a new service that allows customers to top up either their own or other people’s prepaid mobile phones directly from their bank account using a free text short number service.
The new service will be made available to all of AIB’s existing internet banking customers.
Text messages instructing the bank to top up mobile phones are free using free-text 50131 and AIB customers can top up their phone even if their phone credit is zero.
The service will be available across all mobile networks in Ireland as well as overseas using the respective networks’ roaming facilities.
The general manager of AIB’s eBusiness & Payments division Billy Andrews commented: “AIB customers can already top up their phones via ATM, internet or phone banking and the added facility of text top-up enhances the bank’s service and provides customers with extra choice.”
