Amazon CTO to talk cloud at Dublin Web Summit

Werner Vogels, CTO of Amazon, will speak at the Dublin Web Summit’s “Beyond the Cloud” event in October.

Vogels has led Amazon’s approach to cloud computing with Amazon Web Services. Before he joined Amazon in 2004, he was a researcher in Cornell University’s computer science department, specialising in large-scale distributed systems.

“Ireland is uniquely positioned to take advantage of growth in cloud computing, so we’re delighted to have Werner at Dublin Web Summit. He’s phenomenally influential and a great speaker, a real coup for us at Dublin Web Summit,” said Paddy Cosgrave, organiser of the Dublin Web Summit.

Vogels is one of four speakers at the “Beyond the Cloud” event, which is being held in conjunction with IDA, SFI and Enterprise Ireland.

Other speakers at this event include Eachan Fletcher, VP of Technology for Expedia; Niall McEntegart, Yahoo!’s director of Data Centre Operations in EMEA; and Christian Belady, general manager for Data Centre Advanced Development in Microsoft’s Global Foundation Services.

The speakers for the October Dublin Web Summit were announced at the Pub Summit, a networking event for those in the tech industry. Some 1,300 people are expected to attend the summit over two nights.

“We’re very lucky in Ireland to have quite an outward-looking tech scene. The Pub Summit brings together not just the programmers or the social media types, but also the accountants and the lawyers who have a focus on tech. It’s all encompassing,” said Cosgrave.
