Anonymous attack reveals US, UK and Nato email passwords

9 Jan 2012

A hacker attack believed to have been orchestrated by Anonymous has seen thousands of US and British email addresses and passwords belonging to politicians, defence department officials, police and Nato advisers exposed.

The hactivist security breach includes email addresses of 221 UK military staff and 242 Nato officials.

The hackers, who are understood to be members of hacktivist collective Anonymous, gained access over Christmas to account information belonging to Texas security and foreign affairs consultancy Stratfor and gained access to some 850,000 individuals who subscribe to the consultancy’s website.

Victims of the attack include civil servants working at the heart of the UK government, including members of the Cabinet office and advisers to the Joint Intelligence Organisation.
