EMC and Lenovo in data backup plan for road warriors

3 Sep 2008

Data storage giant EMC has teamed up with computer maker Lenovo to provide laptop-toting, small business professionals on the move with global, unlimited online data backup.

The alliance will see EMC’s Mozy service establish a new international data centre in Ireland for backing up SME data, The centre will be located in Dublin.

Under the global partnership between EMC and Lenovo, both companies will provide an unlimited online data backup service designed specifically for the small business professional.

The new service is available on all new Lenovo ThinkPad SL series notebooks and is powered by EMC’s data backup service for consumers and businesses, Mozy.

“We looked to EMC’s Mozy as the premier online data backup and storage service for Lenovo customers,” said Henry Hicks, vice-president of sales and marketing at Lenovo.

“Because data protection and security are growing concerns for businesses, we wanted a world-class online data backup and storage solution to complement Lenovo’s world-class products. EMC’s Mozy delivers that with the right level of security and quality.”

Mozy provides a simple, automatic and secure online backup service to more than 850,000 users across the globe.

Key features of the new Lenovo Online Data Backup service include unlimited online backup capacity, open and locked file support, bandwidth throttling and a privately managed encryption option using Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).

The new data centre for Dublin will address certain government regulations pertaining to electronic data storage and encryption export restrictions.

The Lenovo Online Data Backup service is currently available in Ireland, UK, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, United States and Canada. The service will soon be offered on a worldwide basis for all Lenovo Think-branded systems and will support seven languages.

“Protecting information on personal computers is especially critical for small businesses that can’t tolerate data loss or employee downtime,” said Vance Checketts, chief operating officer of EMC’s Mozy business unit.

“The Lenovo partnership accelerates our plans to expand the Mozy service worldwide, and we look forward to offering international customer support and localised language versions,” Checketts said.

The new Lenovo Online Data Backup service powered by EMC Mozy is available currently as a free 90-day trial with up to 5GB of storage when select Lenovo notebook models are purchased. More information on pricing and availability can be found at www.lenovo.com/protectmydata.

Mozy, which was acquired by EMC last year, is currently managing more than 10 petabytes (10 million gigabytes) of information across multiple data centres for more than 850,000 users and 23,000 business customers.
